目前改造的受体包括蛋白激酶、各种代谢酶和G蛋白偶联受体(GPCRs)等。2007年诞生的由设计药物专一激活设计受体(Designer receptors exclusively activated by designer drugs,DREADDs)技术是指只由叠氮平-N-氧化物(Clozapine-N-oxide,CNO)激活的受体,这些受体会选择性地作用于不同的GPCR级联反应来调节细胞信号转导,包括Gq、Gi、GsD、Golf和β-arrestin,其中应用最广泛的是Gq-DREADD和Gi-DREADD。
